The overall goal of this research project is to discover the relationship between facial expressions and student performance using an intelligent tutor system.Although for humans it is relatively simple in most cases to understand facial expressions, finding computational mechanisms to accomplish such task like humans do is an unsolved problem.In relation to its computational mechanisms, facial expression recognition can be performed through pattern recognition techniques in images and artificial neural networks with the new computational models based on convolutive layers.As a result, it is expected to master the technology for recognizing emotions from facial expressions captured in images or videos, as well as applying an assessment with students to analyze the different types of facial expressions at different levels of complexity.
